Today we celebrate 60 years of Wellers Hill Medical Centre! It was established by Dr Nicholas Conomos on the 1st February 1961, the day of the birth of this son, James. The practice started as a small weatherboard house, which also housed the dental practice of John Pentice. Initially consisting of a small and narrow consulting room with 2 long brown benches for patients to wait and a tiny reception area. Patients were welcome at any time and no appointments were necessary. Dr Conomos would also deliver babies and perform tonsillectomies at the hospitals and patients were happy to go home and return later in the day, if he had to delivery a baby. The first receptionist was Mrs Conomos who would bring her 2 year old daughter, Rosalie to the practice while she worked.
It gradually became busier and in time other Doctors joined the team. It began with Dr Minas Mina in 1974 (leaving in 1987) then Dr Stan Theodoros in 1977, Dr Rosalie Theodoros in 1983 and then Dr Nicholas Gianarakis in 1988. As the practice continued to expand, more Doctors joined over the years. Because of this, the building was constantly being added to. In the late 1990s, the immediate neighbours sold their home to Wellers Hill Medical Centre and plans were made to rebuild the practice. In 2001 that house was modified to enable us to temporarily function from there during construction of the new building. We started seeing patients at the new premises on the original site of 16 Denham Terrace on the 15th October 2001. At the time we thought this building was more than adequate for the future needs of the practice.
However, medicine is constantly evolving and we felt that we could better serve the health needs of our community by improving access to services and so in 2018 Brisbane Health Connect was built. This houses QML Pathology, Wellers Hill Dental, Selective Hearing, Circle of Life Therapy, AusTrials, Wellness Through Movement and Brisbane Medical Specialists (BMS). Specialist Doctors from various specialities as well as allied health such as Toetal Podiatry and Nutrition Compass visit BMS. We also renovated and extended Wellers Hill Medical Centre which subsequently underwent a massive growth. We now have a wonderful team of 16 Doctors with 6 nurses, a dedicated chronic disease nurse and many administration staff all managed capably by our Practice Manager, Cathy Sawyer, Office Manager, Amy Laki and Nurse Manager, Jo Sanders.
In 2005, Dr Conomos retired, exactly 44 years after opening Wellers Hill Medical Centre. He continued to maintain an active interest in his patients and the practice in general until the day he died in 2017. True to his philosophy we have continued to play a role in educating medical and nursing students, GP registrars and in medical research.
Finally, the most important element of our practice sinces its inception, has been our wonderful patients. It has been our privilege to care for so many wonderful people, in some cases up to 5 generations within the one family. Hopefully we can continue to provide excellent medical care with respect and integrity and together face the challenges in the years to come. This was something that Dr Conomos instilled in all those who worked with him and we continue to practice with those principles.
